POEMAS ANTES DE NACER
de Diana Lizette Rodríguez
Poemas Antes de Nacer is a unique collection of visual poems that evokes ancestral multilingual Borderland chants. At each page, the stylized forms weave words, voices, verses, memories and graphic compositions into a tapestry of experiences, resembling a pictographic codex. As in ancient indigenous cultures, the Mesquite tree becomes a metaphor for visual sensing in which the author’s voice blends with voices of others, and earthly sounds, echoing primal poetry and the movement of the sun. Sensing the poetic form shifts the reading as if each iconography produces a mobile focal distance, inviting the gaze to travel across an imagined migrant geography of verses and remembrances. Antes de Nacer pays homage to Mexican Estridentismo poetry, not only in visual forms but also for the social issues and injustices denounced across the verses. Lizette makes the reader aware that, even though the printed word has colonized the idea of writing, storytelling and oral histories still archive the Latinx experiences and shape the ways of remembering.

Ante las rectas imaginarias que nos oprimen, Poemas Antes De Nacer de Diana Lizette es un neo-códice, un caldo de cultivo que desmonta y crea comunidades telepáticas.

Poemas Antes de Nacer is a meditation on generational wisdom, struggle and privilege—an exercise in reckoning which timelines we are and are not responsible for. Language crosses borders while bearing crosses of its own, distilling itself into the form of a map, a salve, a puzzle, a vein. Diana Lizette Rodriguez weaves narrative mosaics, fragments of personal and collective histories, asking us to sift through muddy waters until we recognize the depth between her words, the page and our primordial memory.
